Despite significant progress, anti-doping efforts face numerous challenges. The ongoing “cat and mouse” game between athletes and testing authorities continues, with new designer drugs and masking techniques constantly emerging. Limited resources, jurisdictional constraints, and the enormous financial incentives in professional sports further complicate anti-doping efforts22. Types of Performance-Enhancing Drugs (PEDs)

The negative effects these drugs can have on one’s body make USADA’s mission paramount as to why no athlete should ever have to consider PED use to succeed in sport. Despite inconclusive efficacy and concerning safety data, many adolescents continue to use PEDs. To illustrate, a survey of 198 Olympic athletes evaluated the motives, fears, and consequences regarding use of PEDs.20 The study found that 98% of these elite athletes would use PEDs if they knew they would not get caught and use would result in victory in their sport. When asked the same question with the caveat that the athlete would die within 5 years, 61% still reported they would use the PED.

With all the information, attention, and debate over performance-enhancing drugs (or PEDs), many people want to further understand how performance-enhancing drugs affect one’s body. It’s an important area of concern for athletes and at the foundation of why USADA and other anti-doping organizations exist. Simply put, PEDs have the ability or potential to drastically alter the human body and biological functions, including the ability to considerably improve athletic performance in certain instances.

Beta-blockers are medications that reduce heart rate and blood pressure by blocking the effects of adrenaline. While they are primarily used to treat cardiovascular conditions, beta-blockers can also have performance-enhancing effects in precision sports such as archery and shooting13. By reducing tremors and anxiety, beta-blockers can improve accuracy and steadiness.
These latter studies offer clear evidence for a biologically mediated psychiatric effect of supraphysiologic doses of AAS, although they still likely underestimate the prevalence of such effects among illicit users, who may ingest much higher doses. Also, in human subjects, studies have reported increased aggressive responsiveness to provocation (221). AAS use has also been linked to alcohol use in humans (81) and rats (82). Steroid-induced alterations in opioid peptides in the brain reward system may explain the increased sensitivity to alcohol (82).

However, the actual median age of onset is probably higher, because at the time of recruitment, many study candidates had not completed the age range of risk for starting AAS use.
